Great shifts often occur in life many times. Just look at the great economic shift we are currently going through. That is proof positive that change is inevitable.

I’ve been deep in the bedding and sleep industry for over two years now. Running a website like TrueMores.com by myself requires that I keep my finger on the pulse of the industry. Any industry that has anything to do with sleep, bedding, mattresses, and even fashion too.

I’ve noticed that over that time period there is more and more people caring about their sleep.

Could This Be The Start Of A Sleep Revolution?

Here’s an article I read today about how more people are looking to create a bedroom refuge. A place where they can get away from the world and relax and sleep well.

I’ve been preaching that for years now.

The article also talks about how people are a lot more comfortable spending more money on mattresses and other bedroom products that ensure a great sleep.

After all, it makes a huge difference if you’re in pain trying to sleep and knowing you have the means to stop that completely.

If a change like this took place, the benefits would be astounding. Being better rested means you are happier, you can lose weight easier, you are more productive, the list of benefits can literally go on for a long time.

But There Might Be A Big Problem At The Same Time

Just because people are starting to really care more about their sleep and the importance of it, does not mean they will truly do what’s necessary to fix the issue.

This sounds an awful lot like the obesity epidemic across most of the industrialized world.

Fitness and nutrition knowledge has never been higher and there has never been more money spent on getting healthy.

Yet, the obesity rate continues to skyrocket.

Just because people care about their health and because they want to make a change does not mean they are actually going to do it.

Will You Care About Your Sleep Enough To Make A Change?

It’s an individual question that only you can answer.

You can have the best mattress, the best silk sheets, the best pillow, and a bedroom that is set up like a luxury spa.

But unless you do other fundamental things like:

- Get to bed at a good hour
- Ditch the TV in the bedroom
- Stop bring other electronics in the bedroom
- Stop drinking coffee close to bedtime
- Plus so much more…

You’re never actually going to make the impact you want on your sleep.

The mattress the luxury sheets and the amazing pillow can incrementally help you sleep better. But they are just tools in what really needs to be a behavioral change.

At least that is my opinion.

What do you think?

What is your sleep like and is it what you want?

Do you think we are in a sleep and bedding revolution?

Let me know because this is pretty interesting stuff.

Last year it was all about cotton and how raw cotton prices kept going up. It was actually around fever pitch during the summer months.

It’s a big deal with raw materials go up in price because depending on the retailer, the margins get so squeezed, the costs have to passed in the form of raised prices for the end buyer.

It’s unfortunate and I can say from experience that raising prices is never any fun.

It’s Happening All Over Again

Well it’s happening a gain, but this time cotton is not the culprit. It’s not silk either, but something more popular for lots of people…

Down feathers.

Goose down, the most popular, was $12 a pound in 2009 and today is hovering around $28 a pound. That is a huge increase in cost.

China is actually the biggest producer of down feathers. It’s a byproduct of the goose and duck that is a staple in the Chinese diet.

However, China’s wealth as a country is growing rapidly pulling more and more people to city centers. This is impacting the farmer rural lands and lowering production. Along with that more and more companies are demanding down. So you have a shrinkage in supple and the increased in demand… the perfect storm for skyrocketing prices.

While it’s summer now and you may not be planning on buying a comforter, it will impact prices come the end of summer.

Now Is The Perfect Time To Invest In Silk Comforters

Down has been the staple for luxury bedding for a long time. It’s mainly because compared to something like silk, it’s cheap. Cheap means the big companies want it because they can jack the prices up.

Then then toss their marketing dollars behind it. The fact they are making 300% to 800% profit means they can market a lot.

Silk never gets that type of attention although with it comes to comforters, it definitely deserves it. A silk comforter is better than a down comforter in every way possible.

It’s hypoallergenic

It regulates air flow and body temperature

It’s light but still insulates so you don’t get hot or cold

It’s perfect for a duvet cover and an increase in style

There are so many other reasons.

Here at TrueMores.com we have a range of comforters all with grade “A” pure mulberry silk floss as the filling.

Our comforters are actually unique. They have continuous silk floss throughout the comforter. Most silk comforters are quilted which means that have pockets of silk floss. These pockets prevent the silk floss from shifting and moving around over the life of the comforter.

However, these pockets also create cold spots and uninsulated spots in the comforter.

Our comforters utilize an organic cotton shell about 400 thread count to hold the floss in place. That means there are no cold spots or spots where there is no silk floss.

It’s a big deal. It looks better and it feels better. Plus you can use a great silk duvet cover to add the pure silk feel and design to your bed.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot…

Our prices are not going up.

Silk prices have been high for the last two years. I hope that with any luck, they can even come down which means we can maintain our low prices for a longer period of time.

If you have any questions regarding silk comforters and how to choose the right one, please contact me. I love talk with customers and I would love to help you make sure you buy the right products for your needs.

One thing added, even taken away, can really make any room in your home look completely different. Even if you never even see the difference.

That is one reason I really enjoy looking at design blogs and magazines. There is a great feeling of freedom and relaxation that comes from seeing your living space come together.

Here are five additions you can make you nearly any room in your home which all add luxury.

1. Plants

Minimalist plant setup. But I really love the bed and stairwell concept. I want
a private bed with a little stairwell going up to it.

I am a huge fan of some greenery in my home. Specifically, palm trees. I have this strange obsession with them. I think it’s because they give any space in your home that luxury hotel/resort look.

To me there is something really relaxing and happy about that.

What I also really love about using plants as opposed to flowers is they live much longer. Flowers are pretty refreshing but you need to constantly replace them.

If you want to get some great tips on using greenery in your home, check out this post by Mary Garrity.

2. Silk Pillowcases

I have to talk about some type of silk right?

Luxurious silk pillowcases folded neatly… very fresh!

When it comes to something small that can really add luxury to your bedroom or living room, bold colored silk pillowcases. You can step up the “luxury” look by using the oxford style of what we call the sham style.

This is when you have about a two inch border around the entire pillowcase. It really does make it look very fancy and it’s an easy change.

Silk pillowcases are also very easy to take care of and you’ll love the look they give mixed with some low light levels.

3. Mirrors

See the large mirror next to the bed? It really brings the room to life when
your inside it.

I am not a big fan of mirrors because they scare me. But when mirrors are used correctly, they can make a room look amazing.

Mirrors are used to add space to a room or design through it’s frame. In this case, I’m talking more about using mirrors to create space.

Here is a a great picture from a local luxury builder here in Charleston. This is from a small loft apartment. Nearly one entire wall is a huge mirror. It really looks great and makes the space seem so much bigger.

Here is the same property. The first floor is a salon and you can see mirrors everywhere. In fact there are mirrors in this picture that you can’t see because you’ll think they are areas that lead to other rooms. It’s really well done. (Check out the big round mirror.)

These photos are from CharlestonConstruction.net

Let me know what you think.

4. Scents

This is what I alluded to about adding the invisible to your living space.

Scents can really make your home feel and even look great. It has to do with that smell activating part of your brain that brings back great memories.

I bring this up now because my wife used a eucalyptus smell that you can get at Bath and Body Works. It smells amazing and you’ll love using it.

Here’s a picture of the exact bottle.

I especially love coconut smells. This makes sense given that I love palm trees. But if you have not experimented with scents in sometime, try it and let me know what you think.

5. Using Prints

Rather than going with solid colors, try going with prints. Prints can completely change the look of a couch, a bed, or anything really.

We are actually getting a bunch of new silk prints in and pictures will be going up.

One print that we sell which I think adds a luxury look is the jacquard silk. Here is a picture of this print. It really makes for a perfect duvet cover:

There are so many prints that can really make your room look great.

This year florals are really big this year. We have some great floral prints in silk, but go check out Pottery Barn’s duvet covers. They really have some gorgeous options.

I would link to them and show the pictures here, but I don’t think they would like that even though I am promoting them a little.

What Ideas Do You Have For Easy Changes?

There are lots of little things, which don’t have to be expensive at all, and they can still bring that luxury look and feel.

Share your ideas in the comments section. I would really love to hear them.

Thanks for reading!

Small changes can be responsible for you losing 10 to 15 pounds of weight. Small changes can be responsible for your personal relationships being so much more fulfilling. And of course, small changes can help our (your) planet more than you initially think.

To me it’s a shame that Earth Day is only a day. The change that could be accomplished if we made one day a week devoted to small changes to help the planet. The difference would be astronomical. You’re going to see what I mean when I show you this crazy infographic.

But first let’s look at real tips. Not 10 apps for your iphone that can help you be greener. Real actions you can actually take. All of these help the planet and help your body stay healthier.

1. Use Glass Storage For Food And Drink

Plastic is one of the number one enemies of our planet. Have you heard of the island of plastic floating in the Pacific ocean? It’s bigger than Texas!

If not, click here and you’ll be shocked. That is a Wikipedia link for general overview but you should check it out on YouTube as well.

Did you know there is also one of these in the Atlantic ocean. Plus I’ver heard of one in the Indian ocean as well.

Anything you can do to stop using plastic helps. That is where mason jars come in. Check out this picture of how my wife and I store much of the food and drinks we use daily.

We got 12 mason jars in a pack and they were only $11. Each jar is a liter as well. If you’ve been down to Target or Bed Bath and Beyond, you know how expensive plastic storage can be.

Plus the seal of a mason jar is just as powerful as plastic. And they don’t cause cancer, infertility issues, plus so many more healthy problems.

2. Turn Off Your Computer Every Night

Lots of people leave their computers on for days at a time. Think about all those office buildings filled with hundreds of computers which never get shut off.

According to Dragon Systems Software who did a huge study on office computer usage and energy, they found that nearly all office computers where left on overnight and over weekends. When you put that time together, it accounts to 75% of the week.

75% of the week of wasted energy.

Even though you may only one or two computers, think about what that type of energy savings could mean for your home?

It’s pretty substantial.

3. Eat Local Food

There are many benefits to eating local food. It helps the earth because your food doesn’t have to travel hundreds to thousands of miles (this is a PDF document but very helpful) before hitting the grocery store shelfs.

Keep in mind, even though your actions alone won’t make a direct impact, when enough people take action, change can happen.

Eating local foods also helps your local economy, ensures you’re getting nutritious and fresh foods for your health. Plus it can open you up to trying different foods you may never have before.

4. Use Organic Products If Possible

An organic product is something that doesn’t really create that much of an environmental impact. For example, with the mulberry silk bedding we make, it’s an organic fiber so no chemicals are used in production. The dyes are eco-friendly dyes meeting all the regulations. Finally, we ship with remnant space.

Remnant space means we use extra space that is left over on planes already coming to America. It’s small but again, small things can make a difference.

On the flip side, in the bedding world, sheets like polyester and cotton can be laced with chemicals. These chemicals give the fabrics properties such as anti-bacterial, anti-allergen, and fire retardant, but they are also found in factory runoff too.

This is complex to think about, but it can help.

5. Use Aluminum Water Bottles

Bottled water has a 30% share of the beverage market. Last year the consumption of bottled water grew by 3.5%. According to statistical data, every person in the United States (babies included) drank on average 28.3 gallons of bottled water in 2010.

If each bottle has on average 12 ounces. 28.3 gallons is 3,686.4 ounces of water. That is 307 bottles of water rounded down.

That’s nearly a bottle of water every day.

We are pretty lucky in America that our water is clean for the most part. I am sure there are places where it’s not. But either filtering your own tap water or just drinking tap water from an aluminum container can cut down on that number in a big way.

Plus the plastic from these water bottles is poison to us. If you have now seen the movie Tapped, you should at least check it out. I don’t know if I believe everything they say, but it really does get your thinking.

Aluminum can protect you by keeping you from ingesting all the chemicals from the plastic.

If You’ve Made It This Far… What Do You Do?

That was a lot. I wanted to write more but this post would have gone of forever.

Tell me, what do you do to help out. Everybody does something these days.

Leave a comment. I’d love to try new things and do my best to be part of greater solution for your planet.

I always try to take Saturday’s as a complete day off, however my wife and I have so much to do later today and tonight.

So we took a few extra hours this morning and enjoyed downtown after our weekly trip to the farmers market. I’ve written about our farmers market before, but here are some more pictures from our new camera.

It was a relatively quick walk as we left all of our veggies in the car and I didn’t want them to get too hot.

Here are also more pictures of Charleston. Let me know if you have any questions about them.

This is from one of our favorite farms here. They are an organic farm and the have some of most beautiful greens you can imagine.

That’s my beautiful wife, Kindal, with all of our food!

This is a good wine we had last night. It’s only $7.99 and a very flavorful Sauvignon Blanc… Try It!

Rainbow Row… Some famous homes downtown.

This is the thinnest alley in Charleston called Stolls Alley.

This home is really unique. You can tell from the picture that there is a square side and a round side. It was built way back in the late 1800′s I think. I can’t remember the full story, but the husband designed the square side of the home and his wife designed the round side. It’s really pretty and very unique.

This is the most expensive house in Charleston. The address is 2 Concord St and the main house sites over water on the Charleston harbor. Talk about luxury, this home is on the market right now for $17,500,000. I wonder if they need some silk sheets to help stage for potential buyers?

This was the view from our parking spot.

I hope you enjoyed these pictures. I will definitely take more and share them.

Later this year, many of the family houses downtown will open up for tours. I’ll take pictures of that event because there will definitely be some great design ideas in these homes.

Have a great rest of the weekend and thanks for reading!

When I think of spring and coming summer, my mind goes Hollywood. I think of holding my wife’s hand and falling backwards into a the softest flowers that completely drape rolling country hills (touching!).

And of course there has to be the one out of place, but pretty oak tree.

Sounds carefree and makes you just want to take a deep breath.

Snap back to reality a little and your first thought is probably…

“Allergies! Falling back into soft spring flowers would makes my eye’s puff, the snot to pour, and breathing to be anything but deep.”

Well here at TrueMores.com, I have a solution for you. And this will feel softer than falling backwards into soft spring flowers.

Our New Lavender 19 Momme Weight Silk Sheets

Our deep purple color shown best in this robe has been a favorite and continue to bed. However, I think this lavender is a great spring color.

It’s not very intense which means you can use it perfectly for many designs. If a color is overbearing, typically it needs to be central to a design, but a muted color can add a subtle accent.

What do you think of this color?

Imagine falling back into this spring mulberry silk lavender bed sheet. Now that would feel really good!

The Cal King Lavender Silk Special

I actually have a cal king silk set discounted to only $297. It’s brand new and I’ve only pulled it out to shoot some of these photos.

If you’re interested, you can claim that set here. I can ship it out to you immediately.

Next up on today’s post…

The Lucky Winner of Four Silk Pillowcases Is:

Chris Ziegler

Congratulations.

This was an initial experiment and I think I’ll do some more like this to really help get the TrueMores.com brand out there.

I think the next giveaway will be some scarves. They will be here any day now and I can’t wait.

Here is a picture the winning name card. I did this old school and I also took this crazy picture because I just bought a new camera yesterday to help get better photos of the silk and for my wife’s blog as well. We had these big clovers which made for an easy backdrop for the photo.

Thanks you for being amazing readers and also the best customers for TrueMores.com. I means everything to me.

So part of getting a blog popular is really plugging into the marketplace and forming relationships.

I’ve been face first in silk growing the website as best I can that I have not made time in my schedule to learn what’s out there. That is all until the last few weeks.

I have been researching and reading a lot of blogs, mainly having to do with interior design and just home decor in general. I get so many questions about this, it’s really become a side hobby of mine (which works out well as growing up I was a huge artist all the way up until college).

So here are five blogs that I can reading nearly on a weekly basis. I think you will love these as well, and get a lot from them too.

Five Decor & Lifestyle Blogs You’ll Love:

The Inspired Room (http://theinspiredroom.net/)

This is a really great blog to read. It’s written by Melissa and she is a DIY designer of her home.

What I love is the uniqueness she has. Her pictures are really great and so far the things she has astound me. Her most recent post has this brass magazine holder.

It looks so cool. Almost like it was from some other country and has quite a story of how it ended up in her hands. Although I am sure the real story is not that exotic.

But her posts really get your imagination going about what you could do. And she seems to always answer comments too.

Click here to visit her site

Decor8blog.com (http://decor8blog.com/)

This is one that I have just started to really look through. It covers a lot of different things but just the pictures alone really get my brain thinking about different ideas. Not only with our silk bedding but in general as well.

Holly Becker is the woman that writes this blog. She has a cool story which you can check out here.

Just reading her stuff will make you happy and give you some really good ideas.

Click here to visit their site

MaterialGirlsBlog (http://materialgirlsblog.com/)

This blog is a little more professional, because it’s written by a lot of women that are actually actively designing for clients right now.

I think it can be a little intimidating, but I learn a lot when I read their posts.

Personally I like to read their post about their projects. It’s like an inside eye to what clients want in their home. That type of knowledge is worth a lot.

They also have great pictures and I think you will like this blog, especially if and when you are doing some redesigning of your own.

Click here to visit their site

The Lettered Cottage (http://theletteredcottage.net/)

This is a very fun blog. These two, Kevin and Layla Palmer, run quite the busy life. This is really a lifestyle blog to me.

It’s fun because they teach photography and they are passionate about photography for interior spaces.

They’ve done really cool things like tried to build a program for HGTV. They also seem to do a lot of freelance for these shows, websites, and magazines.

What I like about their blog is all the DIY posts. They have a lot of really cool things they do, which I again use as inspiration. I also think, what can I do to make the silk business better and that is how I get my ideas.

I think you can find applications of what they do to help your home and life.

Click here to check them out

The Pioneer Woman (http://thepioneerwoman.com/)

This is quite different from the other blogs I’ve mentioned to this point, but I love Ree’s blog. She is a cook and mother and has a show on the Food Network.

I really discovered this blog when I was helping my wife with her fitness and nutrition blog. She has a great site too which you should check out.

Anyway, I found Ree’s blog and began reading it. It’s a blast to read. She is really a great writer and things move quick.

To me her site is all over the place which makes it a lot of fun.

I wanted to share this site because I’ve been reading and learning from it. I think you will really enjoy it as well.

I have not seen her show in the Food Network yet. I don’t know that I will seeing my wife and I don’t have TV… plus we eat pretty healthy too.

More Blogs To Come

I will definitely write about more blogs in the future as I find them. It can get kind of addicting to read other people’s stuff. I just hope that one day TrueMores.com blog will be what I envisioned it to really be.

And something I learned from everybody else is to thank my readers. So thank you for stopping by and reading. And thank you to my customers… you truly are the best!

I wanted to make an update post about this blog and the overall site as well. There has been a lot going on this year and getting your feedback and ideas is extremely important to me.

First, the blog.

I want to make the blog more focused on an “affordable luxury lifestyle.” That means I’ll be writing about design, fashion, travel, ideas for the products, and of course all of this focuses on silk bed sheets and the silk lifestyle.

Here are some things I am trying to line up right now:

1. A Lifestyle Podcast

I get a lot of questions about interior design, colors, and how to make sheets work with the way a room currently looks.

So I am trying to get some interior designers lined up so I can host a design show. There will be interviews about interior design, bedroom design, and all sorts of things related to making your home look amazing.

Plus I figure it would also be fun to talk about other luxury lifestyle things too. Travel would be really great along with fashion since TrueMores.com is slowly moving into that arena in some ways.

What do you think?

2. Special Deals

I hope that this blog can grow a little independent from the store, but help the store too.

If it grew a little independent, I thought it would be great to offer deals on things that are related to luxury bedding. For example…

Travel deals, product reviews, and home decor things as well. I just envision this site of TrueMores.com helping get other great businesses some exposure. Plus it would add more value to your life as well.

And who doesn’t love a good deal… although nothing like Groupon.

3. An App!

If there would be some good growth in the podcast and some good guest posts as well, I think an app would be a lot of fun. It would essentially be a magazine type app but have video and access to special discounts and deals.

Here’s a little inspiration for some Home Decor Apps.

What’s Happening With TrueMores.com?

When it comes to the store, things have been crazy this year. I feel like Google has been tossing my site all over the results when you try to find me.

This has caused me a lot of headaches and put more of a point for more silk products. So as you’ve seen, I have the silk scarves coming out and the pajamas are going to hopefully be changing soon.

Another thing that we are bringing out are the silk sleeping bags for travelers. If you travel frequently, you need one of these. Let’s face it, hotel rooms are much nastier than you can imagine.

From that point, I don’t know where to go. I like to remain very focused and complete one thing at a time.

I Want Your Help!

I really want you to tell me what you want or what you think would be cool. It’s similar to a brain dump because you never know when that can be a great idea that I can help make a reality.

So let me know either on the Facebook Page, by email, or on commenting on the blog.

It’s sounds interesting to say the least but it’s true. Justin Timberlake, former teen bopper, now killer singer and talented actor has co-designed a home line with Estee Stanley of HomeMint.com, which is a sub-site of BeachMint.com.

One thing I really like about this is… it’s a guy in the design and home decor world. Sometimes I can feel pretty intimidated with selling silk bedding and try to help people with their home’s design.

Not anymore!

Anyway, here is the interview. Check it out. (Plus the site it’s on is pretty darn good and fun to read.)

Mini-Quiz For You:

I’ll give my abbreviated answers as well and hopefully we can chat about them in the comments.

What Is Your Inspiration?

- I am inspired by a resort look but a little more laid back beach style. I personally want to mix a southern colonial style with a tropical vacation style. Sounds strange, but I think it works.

What Is Your Design Strategy?

- I am similar to Estee. There is usually a really cool piece of furniture or something textured that you can build around. It might have color or not, but you can always use that to build the rest of the room around. The best is if it’s something really unique.

Let me know how you like to design. The best thing about designing for your home is you don’t have to be a “real” designer to do it.

It’s about personal style and inspiration just as much as it’s about design fundamentals and balance.

Let me know what you inspiration is and how you like to or would like to approach designing a bedroom or other room.

I can remember really well wanting to go out and play with my friends. Just as I was about to dash out the door, my Mom’s annoyed voice would come piercing through the air… “Daniel? Did you clean up your room and make your bed like I asked?”

“No Mom.”

Dejected I slumped back to my room to make the bed and to try and clean up a little. It never made sense to me. Why make the bed when I would just mess it up again that same day when I go to sleep?

But according to a pretty large survey of 1,500 people by the National Sleep Foundation, my Mom’s nagging was probably helping me sleep better.

Involving Your Senses In Your Bedroom and Bed Helps You Sleep Better

When I say involving the senses, I mean through the concentration on a clean and comfortable room. Let’s look at some of the things you can do which actually help you sleep better.

1. Make Your Bed Every Morning

It’s pretty crazy but making your bed every morning does something psychological to your brain. It not only makes you more productive during the day and happier, but it helps you sleep better at night.

Actually this is only one of a couple things that help you sleep better at night. But it all starts with making your bed on a daily basis.

2. Comfort Throughout Your Room

Comfort was the key in this survey when it came to getting a great sleep and feeling good about your environment. This included things like having a great mattress and pillow, which we talked about before, to how often to clean your bed sheets.

Plus something that was pretty unique, the smells you use in your room. The idea of bringing in new smells is not really that big. However, people that talked about getting the best sleep was when their bed smelled really good.

You can easily increase comfort through smells by bring in lavender and jasmine, two scents that have science behind them for better sleep quality.

3. Comfort Through Being Cool

Finally, and again you have read this before on TrueMores.com if not on this blog, a cool room makes a huge difference.

With a cool room, you can enjoy your bed sheets more, and if you’re using some luxury bedding, you can really enjoy them more. But temperature matters a lot obviously. The science behind this is for another article as I need to really compile some good data.

Start With Making Your Bed First

If you don’t already, at least consistently, start my making your bed more and picking up your floor. I know my wife and I can work on this.

The funny thing about doing just this is it will trickle down to other habits in your bedroom. If you make your bed every morning and feel great about it, you will want to do other things related that make you feel great. This could be doing laundry more often, or upgrading your bedding and bedroom design.

Try it out for on month where you never miss making your bed. See what happens and I would love to hear about it… as I plan on doing this as well.
