The Right Silk Fabric For You

By: Kindal

Unfortunately it's not as easy as simply saying you want a silk robe or a set of silk sheets. That is because like cotton, there are several types of the material to choose from. So then let's learn about the most common to decide what on earth is the best option for your silk purchase.

Chiffon is the lightest of all the silks and is sometime quite "see-through", because it's very fine most of the time if you're using it for a fabric you're going to need a lining of some sort. So if it's for a night gown or a robe then it's probably not the best option.

Another silk is China silk, like chiffon, it's very light as well and most commonly you've seen it used for silk scarves. It's easy to rip along seams which is why it's not ideal for sheets and clothes. But on the flip side it is the least expensive of all silks.

Third, you have Tussah. This interesting name separates it from the others. It's very organic, as the silk cocoons are cultivated from the wild and not a controlled environment. Plus the worms live off a diet of oak and juniper leaves. Because of their organic living, the fibers are different from one another, and are hard to dye. Plus the fabric needs to be dry-cleaned due to it's delicateness. But it is wrinkle free.

And then there is mulberry silk, the best silk for making silk sheets and clothing because it's durable, the texture is very luxurious and it's the most workable. The worms are fed a diet of mulberries which is where the name is derived from. Over all, it's your best option when shopping for your silk luxuries.

There is one thing to be on the lookout for: fake silks. And I don't mean satin... some people try to pull their products off as being silk however at a better look you may find that it's a silk blend. Cotton-silk and even polyester-silk blends are out there so make sure you find what you're looking for and that it says 100%.
